Q: I'm trying to figure out why the X server won't start.
When I start X, my screen goes black. I press crlt-alt-backspace, and I get the following messages:
**error** sigpipe caught
xinit: connection to server lost
waiting for x server to shut down
**error**sighup caught
This is a brand-new system. I turned on the computer, and logged in as root with my password. I then typed in "startx", and the above messages are what I received.
A: The sigpipe, and sighup are normal for a control-alt-backspace shutdown. Is your monitor capable of doing 1280x1024 @ 75Hz? Try hitting control-alt-(keypad)+ , and toggle through video modes. Find a resolution you like, and edit the last part of /etc/X11/XF86Config.
