European domain info is at whois.ripe.net.

No - some european info is. You would do a WHOIS.NIC.UK for .uk domains - they were not on RIPE when I last looked. But uk.com is an InterNic domain. I couldn't 'handle' a WHOIS.INTERNIC.NET search on uk.com :-) Try it!

www.names.uk.com telephone is listed as being in the Parson's Green area of London. They share the telephone and with www.mailbox.co.uk - the ISP who you will find on WHOIS.NIC.UK.

www.nominet.org.uk is the UK equivalent of InterNIC.

Hope this helps,
Stuart

More than likely the actual domain name is names.co.uk. (.uk addresses use .co instead of .com and .ac instead of .edu.)

As to whois:

whois.internic.net -- "normal" com/org/net domains**
**web interface: http://rs.internic.net/cgi-bin/whois
nii.isi.edu -- .us domains -- very little info last time I checked
nic.ddn.mil -- .mil domains (but our troops don't spam :) )
whois.nic.uk -- .uk (also try ripe)
whois.ripe.net -- most european domains (.nl, .de, .at, .fr, etc.)
whois.apnic.net -- asia (definitely india)

IIRC, there's a list of other domain registries in yahoo. Their web sites should either have a web interface to whois, or would have the whois server's name listed.

I use www for NIC lookups also. A trick I've found that works much of the time is www.nic.XXX, where XXX (or XX) is the country designator.

Hence:

www.nic.uk gets UK NIC
www.nic.mx gets Mexico NIC

The quality of these sites varies. YMMV and all that. Maybe someone who uses whois can see if the same trick works there.
