Local Indian Markets:
North of Us:
Belmont
Namaste Plaza, 890 Ralston Ave. nr. El Camino
Real, Belmont. Nearly everything. For my biryani masala ingredients
resupply, doesn't carry black stone flower or dried fenugreek leaves.
Otherwise, an excellent all-rounder.
San Mateo
- Neelam Supermarket, 150 N. B St. at Tilton Ave., San Mateo.
Hilariously misleading name for a small Fiji Indian corner convenience
and liquor store, but it's said to have some spices.
San Bruno
- Neelam Pacific Market, 492-494 San Mateo Ave, south of San Bruno
Ave., San Bruno. Fiji Indian. Said to be small but well equipped, good
for herbs and spices. Also teas.
South of Us:
Sunnyvale:
- Madras Groceries, 1187 W El Camino Real nr. S. Bernardo Ave.,
Sunnyvale. Described as compact but well stocked, less crowded than
India Cast and Carry, a bit less variety than Apni Mandi. Narrow
aisles. Excellent fruit and vegetables at Felipe's Market, next door.
- Karthikeya Super Market, 812 W El Camino Real between S. Mary Ave.
and Mathilda Ave., Sunnyvale. Good selection of Indian groceries,
snacks, most Indian spices, and other items.
- New India Bazaar, 1340 S Mary Ave. at W. Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale.
Indian, Pakistani, and Sri Lankan groceries and spices. Said to be
tiny but well stocked.
India Cash and Carry, 1032 E El Camino Real
between S. Wolfe Road and Lawrence Expressway, Sunnyvale.
This might be the one that impressed me most, where
I finally found black stone flower and dried fenugreek leaves for my
biryani masala.
Bharat Bazar, 1165 Reed Ave at Lawrence
Expressway, about two blocks south of the Caltrain tracks, Sunnyvale.
Largest Indian grocer in the Bay Area. Wide variety of Indian spices
and grains. Premium priced.
- Mega-Mart, 760 E El Camino Real, between S. Fair Oaks Ave. / E.
Remington Dr. and S. Wolfe Road, Sunnyvale. Large, mostly Korean
food market, with excellent kitchenware aisle.
- Taj Mahal Fresh Market, 933 E Duane Ave. between Lawerence
Expressway and N. Wolfe, Road, almost certainly near Western Filipino
Grocery, Sunnyvale. Large selection, including Chinese, Vietnamese,
Philippine, Japanese, Indian, Pakistani foods.
Apni Mandi, 1111 W El Camino Real Ste 107,
between S. Bernardo Ave. and S. Mary Ave, Sunnyvale. Open 24x7. Compact,
crowded, and very well stocked.
Santa Clara:
Patel Brothers, 2039 El Camino Real near Scott
Blvd., Santa Clara. A bit small but deeply stocked, good for spices,
bulk dry foods, tamarind paste.
Cupertino
- Trinethra Indian Supermarket, 10255 S De Anza Blvd. about two
blocks south of Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino. Preferred by
some Yelp reviewers. Good spices. A little small.
